Hello, and thanks for checking us out!
My name is Deborah and I have been beading since 1986 when I started Belly Dancing as a extracurricular activity while living in the San Francisco Bay Area. The type of Belly Dancing I first learned there was called “Ethnic” and the costumes were made from rich fabrics in standard middle east designs and the jewelry worn was mostly comprised of metal chain with metal accents. The accents were coins or other middle eastern themed charms (scarabs, sarcophogi, Ra sympols, and other dieties) common in the ancient middle east.
BUT when I transferred through my work to Phoenix, Arizona in 1992 I found that the dancing troupes here all were classified as “Caberet” style of dancers. This meant there was freedom with choosing your costume materials and the jewelry used! I love it! If you are interested you can take a look at my personal website to view the costumes I have created. They all include the Bra and Belts I made which required extensive beading...it was very time consuming to make them but oh so worth the end result!
It was at that time I began making my jewelry to wear with each costume and the term “beading” took on a whole new existence. Beading for my costumes was done with totally different materials and tools, like what is used for sewing/embroidery projects. The one common connection were the beads!
